About DalaSinfoniettan

DalaSinfoniettan is a small symphony orchestra from Dalarna, Sweden. The orchestra was formed in 1988, and has ever since been an important factor in the cultural development of Dalarna, one of 24 regions in Sweden well known for its cultural and musical life. The orchestra numbers today 28 permanent musicians and every year they tour 10,000 km all over Dalarna, playing more than 80 concerts in the region. The artistic profile of the orchestra is to present new perspectives; whether it is in traditional chamber orchestra repertoire, presenting music written by Swedish composer or in crossover concerts within jazz, folk music or popular music. On the programme you can find music from early Baroque via the important classical and romatic composers to first performance of contemporary music.

Bjarte Engeset is chief conductor and artistic director of DalaSinfoniettan. He completed his training with Jorma Panula at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki in 1989. In 1990 he was a prizewinner in the Nordic Conducting Competition and since his participation in the 1991 Tanglewood Seminar, USA he has conducted leading orchestras, made concert tours and CD-recordings throughout Scandinavia, as well as in Europe, the Baltic countries and USA.

Innovation, creativity and artistic expression are key words for the musicians of DalaSinfoniettan and with musical joy, warmth and skill they touch their audience. Several of them can be seen as soloists, conductors, jazz musicians or music teachers, in all it brings high standard and good quality to the orchestra. Maybe you even hear a touch of Swedich folk music in the orchestral sound, since some of the musicians have the honoured title National Folk Musician. The curiosity of the musicians truly shines through and concerts are being held both in traditional concert halls and in innovative arenas; for example in warehouses, in public baths or in a car wash centre.

DalaSinfoniettan also hosts the annual international chamber music festival Vinterfest with Martin Fröst as artistic director, during summertime they participate at the spectacular Dalhalla outdoor arena, a limestone quarry that forms a natural amphitheatre, in the northern part of Dalarna. All these various musical projects and collaborations make DalaSinfoniettan a strong cultural trademark for the region of Dalarna!
